This week’s challenge from Kim was to incorporate her new texture “embrace” in one of our compositions. I already did that in last week’s challenge but I’m happy to use it again especially as I found a wonderful photo to use it on. In fact I liked it so much I produced two versions of it.

First I cropped the original photo to remove the bottom part of the photo, then I used the clone tool to cover up the remaining bit of background. I then applied first the pumpkin grunge texture to give it a bit of warmth using pinlight blending mode, then embrace with overlay blending mode and finally aurora (because I wanted a bit of text).

Seeding

Milliande’s art journaling theme for the beginning of this year is “seeds”.
The first one was about sowing a seed versus being the seed. What sort of seed are you?

Papaver somniferum, the opium poppy. I am a dream seed, cast into the Heavens to drift into a sleeping mind and there to sow the seeds of future dreams. I contain within my heart knowledge from years gone by and visions and hopes still to be fulfilled.

The second one was about seed vessels – create a vessel which will contain what you take away from 2011. What does it contain?

my vessel was partly inspired by an earlier post on FB about scattering seeds of love. Each seed contains a little heart and when the seeds are scattered love will be spread wherever the seeds fall.

Kim’s challenge, the first of the new year, is to use any one of her textures in our composition. I have used her latest texture “embrace” in this photo of garlands of flowers at a temple in Cambodia. I blended it using linear burn at 100% opacity.

This is what the flowers look like. They drop off the tree in the early morning.

The challenge over at the Creative Exchange for 2 January 2012 was to choose your favourite photo of 2011. I think this is my favourite.

I came across a quote the other day from an Asian photographer who said this: “I used sepia to signify that we’re living in history. It’s happening all around us. Soon in a few years, people will be looking at us in the past tense”. For the same reasons I decided to render my photo in sepia. I was lucky to catch sight of this old man, who told me that his donkey was tired after the long trek up into the hills.

On day 11 Kim gave us 2 versions of her new texture “rejoice”, a grey one and a beige one. On this photo of the star on top on top of our Christmas tree this year, I have used the grey one here at multiply blend mode, first having applied a gaussian blur

a walk in December

Last Sunday, 18 December, a group of us went for a walk in my favourite spot – Sandima. These are some of the photos I took.

winter roses in flower, a sign that once upon a time somebody tried to cultivate a garden here

an old stone building in what has become known as the “foreigners’ cemetery”. At the moment the green sword leaves of irises that will flower purple in the spring are pushing their way up through the accumulated leaf mould. Apparently they are known here as “cemetery flowers”. If I had to buried anywhere I can’t think of a more beautiful spot.
